CONSULTANCY SERVICES: INTERPRETERS
LOCATION: BAIDOA, MOGADISHU & BALACAD
Numbers required: 4 interpreters
Timeline: 20th to 24th September 2021
A. About Islamic Relief
Islamic Relief Somalia is an International Humanitarian Organization that has been working in Somalia since 2006. Islamic Relief Somalia is committed to achieving its core vision of caring World where basic requirements of the needy are met. Islamic Relief’s goal is to provide an increased access to water, sanitation, education and health facilities to IDPs and other vulnerable groups and economic empowerment to all groups.
B. About the task:
Islamic Relief plans to conduct Core Humanitarian standards audits of its programmes. This audit is to be carried out by auditors from Humanitarian Quality Assurance Initiative. One of the key components requires interviewing of local target population who are our right holders. The purpose is to map out project impact and how Islamic Relief adopted CHS processes and of particular how IR used the CHS benchmarks/standards when designing project, when interacting and engaging communities among other.
C. About this position:
If you are passionate about speaking and writing and can interpret, we are looking for you. As an interpreter with and for our project right holders, you will be assisting with the translation and interpretation of critical information from the source local language into English language. Your expertise and experience will allow you to accurately translate words, original tone and meaning from the right holders to the auditors. You will be preparing materials for translation and submit them to our auditors.
D. Key functions include
· Interact with right holders to translate communications and interview questions from/in English to local language and interpret back to/from English.
· Translate both spoken word and written texts to the target language with superior accuracy, consistency and efficiency
· Communicate in a friendly, positive manner and always engage in active listening techniques to maximize effectiveness of interpretation
· Lead conversations between community members groups and CHS auditors and create understanding between the conversation without changing, adding or removing any contents as said by the interviewers and responded by the interviewees.
· Translate messages, live speeches, voice recordings and documents from local language to English language, with careful attention to providing proper context, meaning, tone and technical wording
· Collaborate with CHS auditors to compile helpful information, including terms and definitions, into an organized glossary for regular reference during the translation process
§ Work with the established ethical codes to ensure sensitive and confidential information remains secure and protected
§ Identify terms and words with conflicting meanings to determine which alternative provides clarity and reflects the original purpose of the message
§ Document changes to translated materials, and maintain an orderly method for filing data for reference later on
E. Interview and selection assessment
All those selected for this assignment shall be taken through the following assessment criteria before awarded the contract.
· ACCURACY: You should be able to translate and communicate the meaning of the original text correctly and precisely. You should not add or omit any information.
· FLUENCY: The translator shall use standard translation (correct and generally accepted) spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
· TERMINOLOGY: The translator shall be able to use accurate key words and phrases in the translation (especially humanitarian terms) and be translated accurately. Should use the same translation used for each term throughout the text.
· STYLE: The translation should be idiomatic (natural) when you read them to the right holders. The style should be appropriate to the readers.
F. Meeting with Community groups:
· Islamic Relief in consultation with CHS auditors will mobilize, organize for online interview, with the selected community groups in a secure, internet enabled facilities within the target project locations. The interview shall be conducted via zoom or any other technological preferences of the Auditors.
· IR shall made known to the interpreter which group they will engage for this task once appointed.
G. Assignment Location:
You are required to travel and stay with community groups in the following Islamic Relief project locations for a period of this assignment:
· Balaad in Middle Shabelle
· Mogadishu- Banadir region
· Baidoa- South West states.
H. Job Skills & Qualifications
Required:
· Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field
· Proficiency in the English language
· Written and verbal fluency local language spoken in Baidoa, Balaad and Mogadishu
· Interpersonal skills
· Strong understanding of written and oral communication both in English and local language
· Excellent bilingual communication skills, both verbal and written.
· Proficient computer skills.
· Proficient with use of office equipment.
· Outstanding listening, retention and note-taking skills.
· Proficient enunciation and pronunciation skills, and pleasant, professional voice.
· Proficient understanding of cultural sensitivity, and ability to collaborate with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
· Excellent knowledge in the use of zoom, skype, teams, webex and other online communication tools
Preferred:
· Familiarity with using technology for translation
I. Assignment Duration/Timeline
· This assignment shall last for 10 days inclusive of preparation, meeting with auditors, IR team and submission of reports.
· Actual community interview date: 20th to 24th September, 2021. Specific dates shall be informed once a suitable candidate is confirmed.
J. Renumeration and benefits:
· Islamic Relief shall pay the interpreter an agreed amount based on the qualification, experience and skills.
· IR shall cover accommodation, transportation and other support required during the course of the task.
K. Application process:
